Skin Allergies (Atopic Dermatitis)
Allergic skin disease is the most common skin problem in Indian dogs, worsened by high humidity, dust mites, and pollen. Dogs scratch, lick, and chew constantly, leading to secondary infections.
Symptoms to Watch For
constant licking of paws
rubbing face on floor
red, inflamed skin (especially paws, belly, ears, face)
recurrent ear infections
hair loss from scratching
foul smell from skin folds
When to See a Vet
See a vet if symptoms are moderate to severe, if secondary infection is suspected, or if home management fails. Allergy testing and immunotherapy may be recommended for severe cases.
Home Management
Bathe with vet-recommended oatmeal or medicated shampoo weekly. Wipe paws after every outdoor walk to remove allergens. Omega-3 supplementation strengthens the skin barrier. Anti-histamines (cetirizine) may provide temporary relief — confirm dosing with vet.
